Researchers in Germany have demonstrated a method of extracting passwordsstored within the Apple iPhone, without the need to first break the handset'sunique passcode - and they did it all in less than six minutes. The attack onthe password store exploits existing holes in the handset security that arealready known about.The method for extracting users passwords is a multi-stage process.Firstly, standard "jail breaking" software is installed into thehandset, and they then installed an SSH server into the handset software,allowing it to run their software. They then installed a keychain access scriptonto the handset. The script uses existing functionality with the IS to accessthe password entries, and it then dumps that data to the hacker.The researchers said that the exploit worked because the encryption key isindependent of the passcode, making it easier to then work out the decryptionprocess to extract the passwords. Not all passwords were extracted, but enoughto make it a matter of concern as it released passwords for services includingemails, wi-fi access and voicemail services.Secrets within other protection classes, such as passwords for websites,could not be revealed, however, the researchers note that in many situations itis sufficient for an attacker to gain access to the user's email account forabusing the password recovery processes of many other accountsSignificantly, they said that the effort for the shown attack method is low,since the used jailbreaking tools are freely available and the additional stepsto decrypt the keychain requires only moderate programming skills.In conclusion, they recommended that owner's of a lost or stolen iOS deviceshould therefore instantly initiate a change of all stored passwords.Additionally, this should be also done for accounts not stored on the device butwhich might have equal or similar passwords, as an attacker might try outrevealed passwords against the full list of known accounts.<pagespeed_iframe title="YouTube video player" width="500" height="311" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/uVGiNAs-QbY?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>On the web: FraunhoferSIT (pdf file)
In a short note on its own blog, Research In Motion has announced that it isbuying Sweden based The Astonishing Tribe (TAT). The company is a developer ofmobile user interface (UI) designs and has a long history of working with mobileand embedded technology.TAT focuses on delivering great user experiences, from a design, technology,and usability perspective. Their design technology is used today in a variety ofindustries including the consumer electronics and automotive sectors.No financial details were provided.As of September 2010 over 180 employees work for TAT at the offices inSweden, South Korea, the United States, and the newly opened office in Japan.

Qatar Telecom is reported to be a potential bidder to buy Zain's SaudiArabian subsidiary if the UAE based Etisalat succeeds in a bid to take amajority stake in Zain's parent company. Etisalat - through its affiliate Mobily- already has an existing network in Saudi Arabia, and it is presumed that thegovernment would require it to sell its future stake in Zain Saudi Arabia.A merger of Mobily and Zain "seems unlikely" since it would violatemerger guidelines in Saudi Arabia's Telecom act, Sico Bank said in a researchnote. It added that "in this context, Qatar Telecom could be a possiblecontender for taking over Zain's Saudi operation considering its strategicambitions to expand its operations in the region."The stake is estimated to be worth around US$925 million, assuming a 25percent premium for a controlling stake.Zain was successful in attaining the 3rd GSM license in theKingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2007 for an investment of US$6.1 billion. In February2008 the company completed its IPO that saw 8.5 million subscribers request fortheir share of the 700 million shares (50% of the company's capital) on offerraising US$1.87 billion.Zain KSA has taken its total customer base to over 7million in less than two years.The mobile network recently announced plans to raise US$1.2 billion through arights issue to fund its network expansion.
Google has announced the launch of its Quickoffice app for Android devicesand Apple's iPhone. Initially launched on Apple's iPad the app enabled theediting of Microsoft Office files and store them on the Google Drive service.The app is available for free, but only to Google Apps for Business users.In addition to bringing Quickoffice to new devices, it's also now easierfor users to find and use Drive files from within the Quickoffice app.And in case you didn't know, iPad and iPhone users can open and edit Officefiles directly from the Drive app. Just open Drive and select the file, makeedits using Quickoffice and save it back to Drive.The company is however keen to promote the use of its own Google Docs serviceand only added the QuickOffice app to satisfy customers who for whatever reasonprefer MS Office documents.QuickOffice was an independent company that Google bought back in June lastyear.The new apps are from the AppStore and GooglePlay.
